Is This The Best Farmers Market In New York?

Built in 1899, the Kelly Barn in Hallcottsville, NY (Delaware County) is the home to one of the absolute top farmers markets in the state, where you can enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables, trout, grass-fed meats, and you can buy artisan crafts like fiber art, quilts, crockery, wood products, and so much more. And all the while in the shadow of (and inside) one of the most historic barns in Upstate New York.

This Delaware County barn, known as the Kelly Barn, was built in 1899 by brothers to be used as a milking barn. The barn is huge, some 90-feet in diameter. It is considered to be historically significant because it is one of the first and only existing round barns to have a fully operational silo located in the center.

Other than being, um, well, round, it is the silo that makes this so cool. The silo was filled from the top and gravity pushed the hay down to the barn floor. Here, the cows, situated in a circle of milking stations, could graze while they were milked.

Today, the round barn is the home of the Pakatakan Farmers Market. It’s been open every Saturday from Spring to late fall for 35 years. Folks in this area come to buy their fresh produce, meats, breads, cheeses, fish, as well as visit the extensive vendors gallery and enjoy some music and good food.. “See you this weekend down at the red barn” is a common phrase heard in the Catskills.
